Position Overview
Our client is seeking an Assistant Project Manager / Project Engineer to support the successful execution of large-scale retail construction projects in the San Jose area.
This is a field-based position working directly from the project job trailer alongside the Superintendent and Project Manager. The ideal candidate is organized, proactive, detail-oriented, and thrives in a fast-paced construction environment where communication, coordination, and problem-solving are critical to project success.
This role offers an excellent opportunity for an emerging construction professional to gain hands-on experience managing field operations, project controls, scheduling, subcontractor coordination, and project closeout activities.
Key Responsibilities
Field Coordination & Project Execution
- Coordinate daily with the Superintendent to manage subcontractors and project sequencing.
- Support jobsite operations and provide coverage for the Superintendent when needed.
- Conduct daily site walks to monitor progress, quality, and potential issues.
- Participate in and lead subcontractor coordination meetings as required.
- Assist with site logistics, safety expectations, and jobsite organization.
- Attend weekly Owner-Architect-Contractor (OAC) meetings and internal project meetings.
Project Controls & Documentation
- Manage RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, and project documentation.
- Maintain current drawing sets and distribute revisions to project stakeholders.
- Track project changes, bulletins, field directives, and design updates.
- Ensure accurate communication between field personnel, subcontractors, and office teams.
Cost & Change Management
- Assist with change order pricing, review, tracking, and execution.
- Collect and evaluate subcontractor pricing proposals.
- Monitor project costs and identify potential risks early in the project lifecycle.
- Support budget tracking and cost-control efforts.
Scheduling & Procurement Support
- Assist with schedule updates and project coordination activities.
- Track procurement status and long-lead material deliveries.
- Support three-week look-ahead planning and milestone tracking.
- Hold subcontractors accountable for commitments, deadlines, and schedule performance.
Project Closeout
- Track punch list items throughout construction.
- Compile operation and maintenance manuals, warranties, and as-built documentation.
- Assist with project turnover and closeout procedures to ensure a successful client handoff.
Qualifications
Required
- 1-5 years of experience in construction project engineering, field engineering, assistant project management, or related roles.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced construction environment.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience supporting commercial, retail, or ground-up construction projects.
- Familiarity with construction management software platforms.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work full-time on an active construction site.
- Ability to walk project sites daily, including uneven terrain and outdoor environments.
- Ability to stand, walk, and navigate jobsites for extended periods.
- Ability to safely perform duties in varying weather and construction conditions.
