Traveling Site Safety & Health Officer (SSHO) Federal Construction
Salary Range: $90,000 – $130,000 annually (DOE)
Location: Nationwide Travel (Project-Based)
Schedule: Traveling / Project Assignment-Based
 
Position Overview
Our client is seeking an experienced Traveling Site Safety & Health Officer (SSHO) to support commercial and federal construction projects nationwide. This role is responsible for implementing and enforcing all components of the Accident Prevention Plan (APP) and ensuring full compliance with USACE EM 385-1-1 safety standards.
The SSHO will work closely with project leadership, field personnel, and subcontractors to proactively identify hazards, mitigate risk, and promote a strong safety culture across active jobsites.
Top Responsibilities
  • Provide technical and regulatory expertise to ensure safe work environments and continuous improvement of the Accident Prevention Plan (APP)
  • Ensure 100% compliance with USACE EM 385-1-1 (latest version)
  • Assist in the development and execution of site-specific safety plans during preconstruction and throughout project duration
  • Identify, develop, and deliver safety training for supervision and field employees (PPE, fire prevention, chemical handling, equipment use, etc.)
  • Ensure contractor activities are preplanned for safety through scope reviews, AHA reviews, and preconstruction meetings
  • Provide strategic safety leadership and guidance to site and company leadership
Key Duties & Responsibilities
  • Support Project Managers, Superintendents, and Quality Control Managers with adherence to company safety and loss control policies
  • Perform daily safety audits, inspections, and PPE assessments
  • Lead investigations of construction-related incidents and near misses
  • Monitor employee exposure to job-specific and chemical hazards
  • Oversee subcontractor compliance with OSHA and EM 385 safety requirements
  • Identify unsafe conditions and take corrective action when safety policies are not met
  • Coordinate and track required safety and environmental training
  • Maintain safety documentation, logs, reports, and compliance records
  • Coordinate inventory and ordering of PPE as needed
  • Submit required safety documentation for approval prior to work commencement when applicable
  • Participate in weekly safety meetings, toolbox talks, and new-hire orientations
  • Perform compliance audits including fall protection, scaffolding, heavy equipment inspections, fire protection systems, eyewash stations, and first aid kits
  • Oversee high-hazard activities to ensure procedural compliance
Required Qualifications
One of the following:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety Engineering, Occupational Safety & Health, Environmental Engineering, or related field plus 2+ years of SSHO experience on USACE projects
    OR
  • 3–5+ years of SSHO experience on USACE projects
Additional Requirements:
  • OSHA 30-Hour Certification
  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA General Industry & Construction standards
  • In-depth knowledge of EM 385, DOT regulations, and local fire codes
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Bluebeam
  • Strong communication, organization, and documentation skills
  • Ability to recognize jobsite risk factors and take appropriate corrective action with professionalism and tact
  • Willingness and ability to travel nationwide for project assignments
